Before they may start a lab they find a recipe and then fill out a Mise En Place Sheet which helps them read through the directions and prepare to have everything in place. After the lab is completed and clean up is finished the students individually fill out a lab report on how smoothly their lab went. Theatre this year has been quite a bit different, but that didn't stop us from overcoming the challenges to put on two wonderful performances. We opted to do two one-act plays so that we could keep students involved but also limit the number of people together at the same time. We had some people who ended up in quarantine, so there were some last-minute substitutions, but that didn't stop these students from stepping up and putting their heart and soul into both performances. We were able to have two small in-person performances back in November, we were able to videotape them, and now we can share them with you. The director apologized for the tardiness of the release of these links. However, She is a firm believer in better late than never, and that theatre never goes out of style. Without further ado, she hope you enjoy watching the New Hampton Drama Department perform "Once Upon a Zoom" by Edith Weiss, and "You Are Virtually Driving Me Crazy" by Todd Wallinger. https://youtu.be/xRXDAn78BNw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUg1FnehMlA&feature=youtu.be

Eighth grader Dylan Carter from New Hampton Middle School has earned first place in the North Central Association of School for the Blind (NCASB) live, virtual forensics competition held in November. Dylan and seven of his teammates earned scores on the performances which landed Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) first place of the 10 participating schools. Dylan prepared and performed an 8-minute humorous interpretation piece. The storyline was a wrestling match, where a boy had to wrestle against a girl, for whom he had romantic feelings. As neither opponent was excited about wrestling one another, they had mutually decided in advance to enter the mat dressed as cavemen and engage in theatrical wrestling until both athletes were “knocked out.” “The preparation for forensics was really good,” said Dylan. “My confidence went up as I practiced, and I practiced a lot to memorize my speech. I spoke loud enough for the judges to hear me- even when you are nervous you need to speak loudly enough in front of an audience.”2 “Dylan is new to any form of speech presentation,” said IESBVI forensics coach Sheryl Thomsen. “He was extremely eager and worked hard. He memorized his piece early and worked on adding movement with different voices. I hope this experience has provided him some newfound confidence in his abilities.” Dylan worked with IESBVI teacher of the visually impaired Ashley Dougherty as well as Thomsen to prepare for the competition.

This fall, the students and teachers at New Hampton Elementary and Middle School were lucky enough to have classes in person. Jeff Monteith, K-12 Extended Learning Program (ELP) Teacher, is taking full advantage of his physical classroom by keeping his students busy with all sorts of fun and interactive activities for learning. One gadget that's a big hit in Mr. Monteith’s classroom is Unruly Splats. Splats are codable floor buttons that light up, make sounds, and collect points when they are stomped on. Students code the rules to create active games with the Splats app on their iPads and get the whole class on their feet by playing student-coded games like relay races and 4 corners. Mr. Monteith is having a blast challenging his students to expand their coding and problem-solving skills while having fun! Check out this video of his students doing a fitness circuit! https://vimeo.com/489447146 “My younger students are excited to use the splats as a game challenge and my older students are excited to write the programs and bring the games they envision to life,” said Mr. Monteith.

Tonight's Double Dual between NH/TV, Charles City, and Oelwien will allow members of the same household into the event with conference issued passes. Masks and social distancing are required in the gym. Spectators will only be allowed in the gym when their team is wrestling. When not wrestling, spectators will be sent to the cafeteria to wait for the next dual. NH/TV fans should not arrive until 6:50 as NHTV does not wrestle in the first dual. We will be clearing the gym between duals to allow for sanitization. Oelwein fans are asked to sit on the south bleachers (furthest from entry) and Charles City fans are asked to sit on the north bleachers for the first dual. We will have a concession stand available, but all food and drink must be consumed in the cafeteria and cannot be brought into the gym. A couple weeks ago we teased a picture of a pretty cool package that we have received at New Hampton Middle School. Today is the day we tell you what it is! Through a program with the U.S. Navy, Mr. Rude was able to obtain a small piece of the USS Arizona! The Arizona was famously sunk on December 7th, 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Chickasaw County had two residents make the ultimate sacrifice aboard the ship. We plan to put the relic on display in the middle school, with some of our middle school students helping to curate and design the display. If anyone would like to help out, the curation team is looking for stories and information regarding Chickasaw County connections to the Pearl Harbor events. Additionally, we are interested in including other artifacts that help create context and connection between Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona, and Chickasaw County/New Hampton Middle School. If you have artifacts that you are willing to donate or loan to NHMS that are related to Pearl Harbor, Paul Johanns, William Ball, or WW2 Navy, we would be honored to display it and tell it's story. Check out the New Hampton Tribune tomorrow for a story with even more details.

Session 2 begins on Monday. Students will report to their Period 2 class on their schedule. At that point, they will get a print out of all of the classes they are scheduled to be in for the session. It will also include a locker number and combination. Due to the drop in temperature, students will be able to only put coats and practice bags in lockers at the beginning of the day and pick up at the end. They will not be able to store other items or food in lockers. We will be fogging the lockers as part of our cleaning process each day.

Ingredients they could choose from: flour, sugar, milk, baking powder, baking soda, eggs, vegetable oil, yeast, cocoa, salt, water, vanilla, lemon flavoring, almond flavoring and/ or water. Some cakes were very dense because they chose too much liquid and some didn't rise well because they didn't choose the correct leveling ingredients. The activity helped the students understand the importance of Food Science and following a recipe when baking.

New Hampton High School will be returning to full in-person learning on Thursday, October 1st. The Iowa Department of Public Health released new guidance today on mask wearing and quarantine. We feel with our current low rates (we don't report numbers when it's below 5 and district-wide it's well below 5) and this new guidance, we can safely bring back all students to the high school at this time. With the new guidance, wearing masks is as important as ever, so we will continue to wear them when we cannot social distance. Everyone has done a great job at keeping our students and staff safe. It will be good to have everyone back together on Thursday. https://5il.co/lmxh

Reminder about tonights game: We need to have everyone in our stadium practicing social distancing to help keep our community and students safe by being able to offer our activities. We have had several new cases in our community this week. Guidelines: - Sit in family units that at 6' apart - Spectators are asked to wear a mask to help reduce community spread -If you don't feel well, stay home -If you are quarantined, you must stay home *A person you may sit with at the game could come down with COVID in the future and being around them closer than 6' for 15 minutes with or without a mask would result in a person needing to quarantine for 14 days. Please be cognizant of others and help slow down the spread.
