Thank you, Mrs. Schmitt The Advanced Foods Class also had to write a description and name their brownie as it would be on a menu for a new restaurant, so we did a Language requirement with this assignment.

Foods I Class making breakfast. We are nearing the end of our Foods I Class and the students are doing so well in their labs. Before they may start a lab they find a recipe and then fill out a Mise En Place Sheet which helps them read through the directions and prepare to have everything in place. Mise En Place is French and roughly translates as "put in place or set in place." After the lab is completed and clean up is finished the students individually fill out a lab report on how smoothly their lab went. They write down all of the prepping terms they performed and how well they worked in a group. "There is a lot to having a successful lab." said Mrs. Schmitt

Theatre this year has been quite a bit different, but that didn't stop us from overcoming the challenges to put on two wonderful performances. We opted to do two one-act plays so that we could keep students involved but also limit the number of people together at the same time. We had some people who ended up in quarantine, so there were some last-minute substitutions, but that didn't stop these students from stepping up and putting their heart and soul into both performances. We were able to have two small in-person performances back in November, we were able to videotape them, and now we can share them with you. The director apologized for the tardiness of the release of these links. However, She is a firm believer in better late than never, and that theatre never goes out of style. Without further ado, she hope you enjoy watching the New Hampton Drama Department perform "Once Upon a Zoom" by Edith Weiss, and "You Are Virtually Driving Me Crazy" by Todd Wallinger. https://youtu.be/xRXDAn78BNw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUg1FnehMlA&feature=youtu.be

Eighth grader Dylan Carter from New Hampton Middle School has earned first place in the North Central Association of School for the Blind (NCASB) live, virtual forensics competition held in November. Dylan and seven of his teammates earned scores on the performances which landed Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) first place of the 10 participating schools. Dylan prepared and performed an 8-minute humorous interpretation piece. The storyline was a wrestling match, where a boy had to wrestle against a girl, for whom he had romantic feelings. As neither opponent was excited about wrestling one another, they had mutually decided in advance to enter the mat dressed as cavemen and engage in theatrical wrestling until both athletes were “knocked out.” “The preparation for forensics was really good,” said Dylan. “My confidence went up as I practiced, and I practiced a lot to memorize my speech. I spoke loud enough for the judges to hear me- even when you are nervous you need to speak loudly enough in front of an audience.”2 “Dylan is new to any form of speech presentation,” said IESBVI forensics coach Sheryl Thomsen. “He was extremely eager and worked hard. He memorized his piece early and worked on adding movement with different voices. I hope this experience has provided him some newfound confidence in his abilities.” Dylan worked with IESBVI teacher of the visually impaired Ashley Dougherty as well as Thomsen to prepare for the competition.

This fall, the students and teachers at New Hampton Elementary and Middle School were lucky enough to have classes in person. Jeff Monteith, K-12 Extended Learning Program (ELP) Teacher, is taking full advantage of his physical classroom by keeping his students busy with all sorts of fun and interactive activities for learning. One gadget that's a big hit in Mr. Monteith’s classroom is Unruly Splats. Splats are codable floor buttons that light up, make sounds, and collect points when they are stomped on. Students code the rules to create active games with the Splats app on their iPads and get the whole class on their feet by playing student-coded games like relay races and 4 corners. Mr. Monteith is having a blast challenging his students to expand their coding and problem-solving skills while having fun! Check out this video of his students doing a fitness circuit! https://vimeo.com/489447146 “My younger students are excited to use the splats as a game challenge and my older students are excited to write the programs and bring the games they envision to life,” said Mr. Monteith.

They were given paper, pipe cleaners, and rubber bands. They had 7 minutes to create their tool and 10 minutes to build their trees.

A couple weeks ago we teased a picture of a pretty cool package that we have received at New Hampton Middle School. Today is the day we tell you what it is! Through a program with the U.S. Navy, Mr. Rude was able to obtain a small piece of the USS Arizona! The Arizona was famously sunk on December 7th, 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Chickasaw County had two residents make the ultimate sacrifice aboard the ship. We plan to put the relic on display in the middle school, with some of our middle school students helping to curate and design the display. If anyone would like to help out, the curation team is looking for stories and information regarding Chickasaw County connections to the Pearl Harbor events. Additionally, we are interested in including other artifacts that help create context and connection between Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona, and Chickasaw County/New Hampton Middle School. If you have artifacts that you are willing to donate or loan to NHMS that are related to Pearl Harbor, Paul Johanns, William Ball, or WW2 Navy, we would be honored to display it and tell it's story. Check out the New Hampton Tribune tomorrow for a story with even more details.

Mrs. Schmitt's Foods I students did a food lab called "Cake Contest." The students were to create a cake without a recipe choosing their ingredients and measurements! Ingredients they could choose from: flour, sugar, milk, baking powder, baking soda, eggs, vegetable oil, yeast, cocoa, salt, water, vanilla, lemon flavoring, almond flavoring and/ or water. Some cakes were very dense because they chose too much liquid and some didn't rise well because they didn't choose the correct leveling ingredients. The activity helped the students understand the importance of Food Science and following a recipe when baking.

New Hampton High School will be returning to full in-person learning on Thursday, October 1st. The Iowa Department of Public Health released new guidance today on mask wearing and quarantine. We feel with our current low rates (we don't report numbers when it's below 5 and district-wide it's well below 5) and this new guidance, we can safely bring back all students to the high school at this time. With the new guidance, wearing masks is as important as ever, so we will continue to wear them when we cannot social distance. Everyone has done a great job at keeping our students and staff safe. It will be good to have everyone back together on Thursday. https://5il.co/lmxh

HS Activities/Athletics will continue in our Hybrid model. Students will not be allowed in the building until practice time or when a team leaves. We will need to continue to wear masks and social distance to limit the risk of our activities having to quarantine both inside and outside. That means everyone needs to maintain 6' distance between another person! Going to a distance learning model for the high school for all students would result in all activities and athletics needing to be shut down. Part of our district's Return to Learn plan was creating a Community Resource Document for families and staff in need of assistance. This document can be found by: 1. Going to the school website 2. Clicking 'Menu' 3. Selecting the drop-down menu for whatever school you're associated with 4. Clicking on 'Community Resources' We hope this document points families in the right direction for receiving the assistance they need during this unprecedented time! Families can reach out to the school counselor in their respective building with any concerns. Students in Mr Rude’s social studies classes started their journey in oratory this week. They are learning about the Podium Points and the Rhetorical Triangle as they participate in the Fords Theater National Oratory Fellowship that Mr. Rude has been a involved with for the past three years. The students made three sentence speeches, and then crafted them into short arguments for topics of their choosing. Topics ranged from lunch food, dogs vs. cats, and everything in between.

Dear NH Elementary Family, This has been a fabulous week here at school! So amazing to see the kids again! I know it was a great first week for our students, teachers and staff too. Teachers spent time building community in each classroom, procedures and processes were practiced and in place (and practiced again!). The kids seem to pick up on everything just like they never missed a beat. Thank you to members of our Health and Safety Team and Elementary Return to Learn plan committee for having most details ready for us to go. Thank you to all of the moms/dads/guardians for all your support in coming back this week; we couldn’t do these things for our students without your aid and flexibility! Just a few of the comments I’ve heard from teachers and staff this week: – “This week far exceeded my expectations. I love it here!” – “These are amazing students. What a blessing they are!” – “I’m having so much fun with my students. They are hard working and awesome!” – “The upbeat energy and positive vibe in the school is great!” – “Today was such a wonderful day!” (This was said every day!) You can be confident that your children are in the best and safest of care. Have a wonderful weekend and good luck to our HS football team tonight and a nice win to our VB team last night. Looking forward to celebrating senior parent night with my youngest son as he approaches his last year of high school, time flies by that is for sure. Yours truly, Mrs. Lansing - Elementary Principal

MS/HS Pick-up I wanted to send a reminder as we have had cars backing up traffic or even stopping on the road. Please do not do this as this causes an issue for all involved. Students not riding the bus will not be released from school until the buses have left campus. Our goal is to have buses departing for the elementary playground around 3:15. Please do not arrive any earlier than this, if you do come early do not enter the loading zone, please use ASH Drive across from the school and wait to drive through to pick your student up after buses have departed. Thank you for helping with this issue and keeping everyone safe!

HS Students: We are SO excited to have you all back with us as we start the 20-21 school year. We wanted to give you a heads up and let you know that the absolute last day to make schedule changes this year will be Wednesday, August 26th. No exceptions. Typically, you have about a week to 'try your schedule out' and make changes as needed, but because the schedule looks different this year, you won't have as many days once the school year starts to make changes. Please take a look at your schedule if you haven't already done so and let Mrs. Maas know what/if any changes need to be made. If you're having issues viewing your schedule or understanding how your schedule is going to work this year, please reach out!

Part of the PBL process is expanding your understanding and learning skills specific to a project. In October our 7th graders embarked on a PBL project about the September 11th attacks. One of the resources they used to kick off the project was a video piece called The Man in the Red Bandana. The students determined that it would be helpful to talk with the author of such a powerful video. We reached out to Tom Rinaldi with ESPN to see if he would join us. He graciously accepted...except fall wasn't going to work well due to his commitments during the college football season. So with our impromptu distance learning opportunity, we decided to revisit the idea and May 5th was the day we were able to have him join us. Mr. Rinaldi provided the students with what amounted to be a very interactive and interesting journalism 101 lesson. Tom gave the students a few tips, with the first one being "Listen". He pointed out that the interview is happening to hear from the subject, so listen to what they have to say and then be curious. He also spoke about using open ended questions and not being presumptive, reminded the students that we are hear to listen to what our interviewee has to say. Mr. Rinaldi did an outstanding job of giving basic pointers about interviewing while modeling them for the students by asking them questions, and then follow up questions. At least four of our students can now say that they've been interviewed by an ESPN reporter! We thank Mr. Tom Rinaldi for his time, as well as Derek Volner, who handles PR requests for their time in both setting up the session and conducting it.
