Mrs. Schmitt loved it when the students are learning in a fun way, but completely engaged in an activity. She made this lesson because her husband and she were dairy farmers for many years and Mrs. Schmitt have collected many dairy antiques. The activity was called, "Guess the Gadget." The students needed to answer the questions of what was the dairy gadget called, what was it used for, who would have used it, and what was its modern day equivalent? She brought 20 items from the past and the students worked with a partner trying to figure it out.
The students have been making pastries from Scandinavian countries. Ebelskivers originated in Denmark and are a little complicated to make. Cooking Around the World students did a wonderful job. They filled them with chocolate chips or homemade strawberry jam that Mrs. Schmitt brought from home. They flipped them in the well pan and waited for them to cool. They were delicious and an unusual pastry that the students had never had before.

Students in Mrs. Macon's Spanish I classes did a multi-tiered activity called "Team Windows" which involves all of the aspects of language learning, as well as soft skills. First, each student wrote 8 important events in Spanish from our class story. Then the students were put into groups of 3 or 4 to read aloud their events in Spanish to compare to others in their group. Other group members had to listen to see if that event matched their own. Once they read all of their events and sorted them into categories, they went on a "Gallery Walk" to mark any stations that matched the events of their "team."
New Hampton SkillsUSA Chapter hosted our first Adult Woodworking Workshop. We had 5 adults that signed up. The students did an amazing job and the feedback we received was outstanding!! The adults that participated had a great time. The students should be extremely proud with what they accomplished last nights event!

Mrs. Schmitt is proud to announce that Karla Pickar, senior at NHHS, won a Gold Medal at FCCLA Iowa State Competition in the Job Interview category. The top two gold medal winners were chosen to continue on to FCCLA Nationals. This year FCCLA national competition will be held in Orlando, Florida in July. CONGRATULATIONS KARLA for all of your hard work, excellent presentation, and prepared portfolio. Karla will go on to Nationals and have a chance to win scholarship money. Karla's parents are Sarah and Mike Pickar of New Hampton, Iowa.
The students have not received their ribbons and rubric results for the Cake Decorating Competition. Students and Mrs. Schmitt know they did not finish in the top three for levels 2 & 3, but Mrs. Schmitt was so proud of her students. Braelyn Cagley & Chloe Willadsen were in levels 2 & 3: McKenzie Herzberg and Izabelle Engelhart & Elena Federspiel. You can see from the pictures how amazing their cakes were! There were around 80 submissions, so the competition was fierce.
FCCLA State Competition - We were off to state competition at Cedar Rapids from Sunday, March 23rd to Tuesday, March 25th.
Foods II Classes made many different foods for their Grain Labs: muffins, cheddar bay biscuits, pancakes, fettuccine alfredo, rice dish, cookies, etc. The students learned that you simmer rice and boil pasta. They learned about nutrition, how to store grain products, how to cook different types, and about all of the different kinds of flour.
Foods II Class (two sections) decided they wanted to do a Mac-N-Cheese Competition during our Grain Unit. We invited two judges from MercyOne: Brandon Tenge (a NHHS alumni and is a Director of Ancillary Services) and Jennifer Monteith (manager, development, and public relations). A huge thank you to our judges. They had a difficult job of trying 11 different mac-n-cheese dishes over two class periods. Mrs. Schmitt made a rubric for the students and judges to know what their expectations were.
