Hospitality & Tourism and Housing & Design Class took a field trip to Brucemore Historic Manor in Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Schmitt wrote a grant to Silos & Smokestack and was awarded $350.00 to help pay for the field trip. We looked at their new landscaping; especially since they lost hundreds of trees during the Derecho. The students learned that Iowa has over one billion dollars earned yearly in tourism. Brucemore staff pointed out the many architectural details and told the students the history of the manor. They learned that one of the owners was in charge of Quaker Oats Company and that his brother was lost on the fatal voyage of The Titanic. The best part was pet lions used to roam the grounds! "Hands-on experiences like this will stay with our students. A huge thank you to Silos & Smokestacks for your grant!" stated Mrs. Schmitt

Baking I Class made crepes for their Quick Bread Unit as a pour batter example. Quick Bread's leavening agents are baking powder, baking soda, or air, but not yeast. The crepes were filled with Nutella, fresh strawberries, and topped with whipped creme for an amazing dessert.
