Our FCCLA chapter has 18 members. I took 10 members to the Fall Leadership Rally at ISU. It was a little overwhelming with 750 students from all over Iowa. The pictures are from our afternoon session: Food Safety in Practice: Don't Cross-Contaminate! The session was done in an ISU Culinary Creation Lab room. As a new chapter we are still learning a lot about FCCLA. We are planning on entering cooking competitions at the state level in March 2024.

The fifth graders are working on a beginning chemistry unit to determine which nutrients are in certain liquids and foods. They are performing labs, collecting data, communicating their findings, using their results to draw conclusions, and summarizing their experiences.

Foods I Class learned about the importance of using a recipe. Today's lab was to make a cake WITHOUT a recipe. Ingredients of flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, vanilla, eggs, milk, and butter were set out for the students. Ready, set, bake! Most cakes were edible and a few were not. I am sorry that I didn't get a picture of any of the finished cakes. We then talked about the eight parts of a recipe.

Mrs. Macon's Spanish I classes worked through an activity called "Chain Reaction", where they sequence the cards based on a story we read entirely in Spanish. Each card has a question in Spanish, which leads them to look for the correct response on another card, and so on. Excellent practice! They did great!

During the week of Homecoming, the students in Advanced Algebra worked on a project that involved describing their drive home after school. Students were asked to write a summary that highlighted their speed and time. They sketched a graph of their entire drive home using those two variables, wrote equations to graph at least the first five lines using Desmos, and drew a map including street names and traffic signs. Some students went above and beyond, writing equations for every part of their drive home. They worked hard and did a great job!

In celebration of National Farmer Day on October 12th, the New Hampton FFA Chapter's Ag Advocacy Committee led by Emily Geerts, put together our first Young Farmer Reading in the New Hampton Elementary School! Teachers were able to sign up to have our members come and read age appropriate, agricultural based books to their class! We were able to visit 14 classrooms - about 275 elementary students!!! We got amazing questions and feedback from the elementary students and staff and look forward to putting this event on again next year! (hint, hint, maybe activities for elementary students during National FFA Week as well:)!!!
