Ms. Junk's 4th Grade groups are Published Authors! While learning about the Six Syllable Types, the students worked through the writing and illustrating process to share their knowledge with others! They were rewarded with a Publishing Party and Ice Cream!
Literacy Interventionist

to end the year in the library, 3rd and 4th graders learned about how books can be mirrors and windows along with the importance of reading both kinds of books. Books that are mirrors showcase characters that look like them, act like them, and like the same kinds of things they do. Books that are windows showcase characters who look, act, and think differently than they do, opening them up to a whole new world of experiences.
Through this lesson they learned about the words sympathy and empathy and how we can use books to build those feelings. The students first had a picture of a mirror and wrote POSITIVE things they feel about themselves and then a picture of a window where they wrote POSITIVE things they see in others. We finished the lesson by reading The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig and had great conversations about sympathy and empathy.

Reminder: 2-hour early dismissal today!

Dear Parents/Guardians:
This morning at the Elementary we had a student health issue, in which we called for ambulance services. Since it is unusual for us to have emergency vehicles at the school, I didn’t want parents to be alarmed. The emergency was handled by school staff and EMS.
We want to extend our sincere thanks to law enforcement, EMS, first responders, and our teachers for their swift and effective actions in ensuring the safety of our students. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority, and we will continue to take all necessary precautions to maintain a secure learning environment.
Please feel free to contact me via phone (641-394-2134 ext. 1) or email with any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Emily Steele

NICC’s Women’s Empowerment Conference was a powerful celebration of hope! On Tuesday, May 6, several students from Iowa BIG North partnered with NICC to host the 4th Annual Women’s Empowerment Conference. This year’s event was especially meaningful, as it featured Sarah Updegraff Murray, former New Hampton Principal, as the keynote speaker.
Last year, students honored Sarah following a life-altering accident. This year, they had the incredible opportunity to celebrate her recovery and resilience in person. Sarah shared her inspiring story with over 120 students from 12 different high schools, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.

The Spanish III students completed a cultural art project a couple of weeks ago. They learned about different types of paintings, then researched painters from Spanish-speaking countries, created a presentation, and presented to the class in Spanish. They also had the opportunity to paint a small portion of one of their chosen painter's works. Thank you to Art teacher, Melissa Nelson, and student Karla Pickar for presenting to the students about types of painting styles and sharing your expertise.
