Mrs. Ohrt"s Environmental Science Class is learning about Iowa's Water Quality. Yesterday we performed a mock trial skit regarding the Des Moines Water Works lawsuit. The students all had a role and did well even though acting may not be in their wheelhouse!

7th period Foods I Class did Cupcake Wars last week. This is my largest class, so the poor judges needed to taste five cupcakes! Thank you to our judges (Mr. Manson, Mr. Jurrens, and Kyle Oxyendine) for taking time out of their busy day! The students put a lot of planning, hard work, and presentation into this contest. They were judged on taste & flavor, orginility, and complexity of design.

Yesterday the 8th grade students got to hear from Linda McCann, a local Iowan author. She discussed the Prisoner of War camps that were in Iowa during World War II as well as how she conducts her research. Linda also has a special tie to NHMS as her granddaughter is Mrs. ten Hoeve!

We celebrated el Día de los Muertos in Spanish II by decorating sugar skull cookies made by Mrs. Roberson. One of the items traditionally placed on the ofrenda is sugar skulls which are decorated to represent someone who has passed on.

The Spanish III students created an ofrenda again this year to commemorate those who have left this world during Día de los Muertos. It gave everyone the opportunity to remember and share about someone special in their life. It is a meaningful experience. For those who are unfamiliar with the celebration, it is not celebrated in every Spanish-speaking country, but where it is there is an ofrenda in the home and a visit to the cemetery. While there is food and dancing, the primary focus is on those who have passed away and carrying on their memory.

6th period Foods I did Cupcake Wars. They really worked hard on this project. They were graded on originality, taste & flavor, and complexity of their design by our guest judges. A huge thank you to our judges: Mr. Schmitt, Emily Hemesath, and Mrs. Maas. One student from each group was also chosen to be the spokesperson to describe how they made their cupcake.
