
Dynamic Dairy Carnival
"Students “Mooved” through ten stations learning about dairy nutrition."
Mrs. Schmitt’s Foods II high school students decided to create an event for the New Hampton preschoolers for their PBL (Project Based Learning Project). “How do you teach preschool students about dairy?” The two-sections of Foods II students came up with a Dairy Carnival as a way for students to learn about dairy nutrition.
The Dairy Carnival had 33 high school students, 55 preschoolers, and 22 staff; totaling 110 people at the event! Jessica Rochford from the Chickasaw Farm Bureau’s Outreach Coordinator donated dairy coloring books and her time to help during the event. The students “Mooved” through 10 stations learning about dairy nutrition. The Foods II students came up with a carnival game about dairy nutrition, name of the game on a poster, skills learned, materials needed, and rules of the game. Prizes were given at each station donated by Midwest Dairy Supplies and some were purchased with grant money.
Let the fun begin! The students were asked different questions at each station then they were able to play the games and get a prize. The stations were: Get the Scoop (ice cream cone ping pong), Guess the Gadget (matching antique dairy gadgets with the picture they were used for), Milk the Cow (students were able to milk a cow’s udder to get the milk out), Tic Tac Toe Dairy (when answered correctly they placed an X or O), Cow Craft (decorated a Holstein, Beef Short-Horn, & Highland cows), Dairy Taste-Testing (vanilla & chocolate pudding, smoothies, & cheese curds), Pin the Tail on the Cow (able to play after answer questions about dairy nutrition), Milk Toss (tossed a bean bag at dairy jugs after answering questions), Race to the Creamery (a car mat with three creamery trucks and at every stop sign you needed to answer a question), and Spot the Dairy (you chose the dairy products out of the toy food assortment).
“This was a fun way for the preschoolers to learn about dairy and the high school students were amazing interacting so kindly with the little ones. They don’t realize they are learning by teaching!” stated Mrs. Schmitt. “The Dairy Taste-Testing and the cool cow sunglasses were the biggest hit, but I think seeing all of the smiling faces learning was “Moosic” to my ears.” said Mrs. Schmitt. There will be a representative from NICC at our Career/Opportunity Fair next week on March 12 that will be available to help with any FAFSA questions. Students do not need to be planning to attend NICC in order to receive assistance with this. Last Friday, the 1st graders celebrated good behavior at the skating rink for our 3rd quarter PBIS celebration!





Elementary Parents: Your child will be coming home with a book fair flyer. The book fair will be here next week! More information will come!

Drivers ED classes and lessons have been CANCELLED this week. Mr. Kuennen will reach out to everyone to reschedule.

Good Luck to our Girls' Track & Field team!! They are going to travel to Mason City for their first track meet. The meet will start at 3:30pm this afternoon. Go Chickasaws!!

STRAWBERRIES WILL BE HERE Tuesday, March 12th. They will be available for pick-up in the F.C.S. room (old cafeteria) from 3:30-5:30. Please make sure all of the buses have left the area before you attempt to park. This is parent-teacher conference night and if you need to pick them up later than 5:30 please email Mrs. Schmitt at a_schmitt@new-hampton.k12.ia.us and she will come to her classroom during conferences.

Middle School Students enjoyed an "Outfly" day. Students enjoyed some cooperative play and worked on teamwork with a homeroom dodgeball tournament. So much fun was had in the building today.










First day of the Hummingbird Kits in Hoskins 3rd grade classroom! Students were excited to get them out and start the process of setting them up!



2nd grade students learned about the roles in computer science then each took on a role when commanding and programming the BeeBots!




The Spanish III students are using their drama skills in class by acting out scenes from a story being read which practices this unit of vocabulary. The story was about 2 octopi trying to escape being caught and eaten. The vocabulary includes: 'approached' and 'saw that there was', and adds more past tense learning.


Great night for some Jazz! The Middle School and High School preformed the Annual Jazz Dessert Show tonight for their tune up for contest tomorrow!





On the second night of Parent/Teacher conferences, the High School Guidance Department will again be holding grade-level parent meetings. We held meetings for the Freshman and Senior parents in the Fall, and this Spring, we will hold meetings for Sophomores and Juniors. Both meetings will be held in the old high school cafeteria (upper level) on Thursday, March 14, with the Sophomore parent meeting being held from 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. and the Junior parent meeting held from 6:30 - 7:00 p.m. While these are not mandatory, there will be useful information given on course policies, college visits, FAFSA, college admissions, graduation, etc.

Elementary is kicking off Read Across America Week soon! It will be from March 4th through March 8th! The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading. Focus is to encourage reading and educate people about its benefits, especially among children and young adults.



Mousetrap Racer projects are underway in Physical Science!!! Students have constructed and tested a prototype design and are currently working on their redesign proposal.



7th Grade FCS students have started their food labs with Easy Cheesy Garlic Bread made with fresh garlic. The students are learning teamwork, time management, and following directions. 36 (2 sections) 7th graders this semester take exploratory CTE (Career Technical Education) classes and dabble in different classes to see what they will want to take in high school. Way to go seventh graders!


Making pasta dishes from Italy. Cooking Around the World students used their homemade pasta in different Italian dishes. Bravo!
