This is my third class of Foods I this year. They have been practicing their knife skills and cut up vegetable trays to take home for a healthy snack. They use a safety cutting glove and the "claw" hand position when learning knife skills. I demonstrate first, review, and then they try it slowly on their own. Tips: make sure to secure your cutting board with a wet towel, use the "claw" hand form so you don't have any fingers in the way, use a sharp knife as dull knives are more dangerous, and pay attention to what you are doing. 🥕🥬🌶

is that time again for our Fresh Strawberry Fundraiser for the FCS department. The strawberries that we got last year were AMAZING! A family-run business in Florida picks the strawberries one day and drives them up here to Iowa the next day. "Last year I made fresh strawberry pie, froze some for smoothies, and made strawberry jam, but mostly we just ate them fresh." stated Mrs. Schmitt. FCS students will be selling them, but you may also email Mrs. Schmitt at: a_schmitt@new-hampton.k12.ia.us. $32.00 for a flat of 8 quarts and $18.00 for a flat of 4 quarts. LAST DAY TO ORDER WILL BE FEBRUARY 14TH. (You may pay cash or a check to NHHS).

Advanced Foods Class completed their Beverage Unit. We did a lot of small labs! The students made fresh-squeezed orange juice, cocoa "bombs" with homemade hot chocolate mix, smoothies, orange julius, and lemonade from scratch. They learned about coffee and tea. How to brew it and where it originated and all of the different kinds. They did well on their assignments and tests. Hands-on learning in FCS keeps us hopping!

Our last items to come in that were purchased with grant money were chef coats. 24 Chef coats (6-Red) and (18-White) all in different sizes for our cooking labs. The red chef coat will be worn by the head chef of the day and the rest will be the sous-chefs. Every student will rotate responsibilities for each new lab. We are running our labs as industry standards to help our students achieve their culinary goals.

It is great to have a supportive police department in New Hampton. Paul Scally stopped in the Middle School and gave some students a little advice on things to live by
